Galle Face Green and Hotel

Click above to see photos of the Galle Face Hotel and Galle Face Green in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

In a way it's like Galle Face is the centre of Sri Lanka. Everything seems to grow out from that strip of grass. Galle Road, which extends along the western coast of the island, originates here. The Green itself was created by the British in the 1800's and it seems to be the place where many in Colombo go to spend time. The hotel, which faces the Green on its southern end, is another British leftover; it's a little creaky and at times pretty creepy. There are higher quality hotels in Colombo but GF Hotel is the best known and has the longest tradition. There's a large plaque on the wall as you enter the main lobby with the names of famous people who've stayed there, I wish I had gotten a picture, it was impressive.
